We’re knee-deep into the holiday season and it’s time for a quick reset. So we asked nutritionist, celebrity health coach and real OVME Chicago client Karina Heinrich — the powerhouse behind The Karina Method — for some tips on skincare and detoxing. See what she had to say below—and before you tuck into that plate of leftovers, give her antioxidant-rich smoothie recipe a try.
OVME: Thanks for chatting with us! We’re getting into winter—why is it important to take care of our bodies and skin right now?
KARINA HEINRICH: We need to hydrate and keep our skin moisturized because the weather can be so dry and harsh on our skin. With the high stress of COVID, more unhealthy bards and alcohol being consumed and maybe not as much exercise, it’s even more vital that we are trying our best to take care of our bodies and skin. Eating high-antioxidant bards, drinking lots of clean water, getting tons of exercise in and keeping up with our healthy skin routines is ultra important to feeling our best.
OVME: You recently stopped into OVME Chicago. What’s your go-to service at the studio?
KH: I love the OVME HydraFacial because there is no downtime, it’s speedy, feels amazing and I absolutely love the glow I am left with—even weeks after. It’s an amazing way to hydrate, sooth and moisturize my skin, which is a plus as we enter these dryer and colder months. … I wear a lot of TV makeup and I want to make sure that I am doing everything possible to keep my skin looking youthful and healthy. After the facial I notice that my skin looks clean and hydrated; it definitely has a glow to it.
OVME: Speaking of glowing, how do you Find Your Glow?
KH: Moving my body truly energizes me. I have been a runner since I could walk and it’s still what helps me start my mornings feeling strong, healthy and calm. It’s my daily boost of energy. Giving my body a good sweat helps me feel the most alive and the healthiest.
Karina’s Chlorella Antioxidant Smoothie
Here, Karina shares her recipe for a detoxifying smoothie to try this season. The secret sauce is chlorella, an ingredient made for skin-health junkies like ourselves. It’s a type of freshwater algae packed with protein and vitamins that help improve overall circulation and maintain firm and supple skin—plus detox the organs, especially the liver.
Serves 2
1 cup frozen organic blackberries
1 cup frozen organic raspberries
1 cup frozen organic blueberries
½ cup organic strawberries
½ cup coconut water
1 cup filtered water
½ cup ice cubes
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1 teaspoon powdered high quality chlorella
Combine the blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, coconut water, filtered water and ice cubes into a high-powered blender. Blend until smooth and creamy. Add in the fresh ginger and chlorella and pulse until mixed. Enjoy right away to reap the benefits.
