The Ultimate Guide to Skin-Altering Lasers

The Ultimate Guide to Skin-Altering Lasers

Published on November 1, 2021

IN THIS ARTICLE:

Laser skincare treatments might just be a veritable fountain of youth for your skin. Lasers help resurface the skin to reduce wrinkles, age spots, acne scarring, and other imperfections. They also brighten and balance skin tone by tightening the skin’s appearance.

“Think of lasers as a part of everyday laundry. Botox irons the sheets; lasers clean the sheets.

– Dr. Mark McKenna, Founder & Chief Medical Officer of OVME Aesthetics

You asked for a complete guide to laser skincare treatments, and we answered: If laser treatments intimidate or intrigue you, we’re here to give you the 411, take out the scary and add the ultimately satisfying world of laser care to your routine.

01. What are Lasers?

Laser treatments are one-of-a-kind facial rejuvenation procedures that use skin-safe, medical-grade lasers to improve and correct the appearance of skin imperfections such as hyperpigmentation, aging, and scarring.

At OVME, we offer two different laser treatments: OVME Laser Resurfacing and OVME Photo Facial. Each of these laser procedures creates amazing results for brighter, more youthful-looking skin, though we customize the treatment plan based on your particular skin goals.

Want to treat skin tone and prevent visible aging over time? Want to improve texture, tighten skin, and reverse deep sun damage? Read below to find out how.

OVME Laser Resurfacing

OVME Laser Resurfacing is the only laser resurfacing treatment that combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths to deliver optimal skin health with minimal downtime. The one-of-its-kind dual laser creates microscopic channels to activate the healing response close to the surface (ablative), while simultaneously sending heat deep down to trigger collagen and elastin production (non-ablative). It delivers powerful cosmetic results without a lengthy recovery process.

OVME Photo Facial

The OVME Photo Facial (sometimes called BBL) uses the word’s most powerful broadband light device that uses light energy to gently heat the upper layers of the skin, stimulating your cells to regenerate while also penetrating deep into the skin to boost your body’s natural ability to fight the appearance of aging. We believe the OVME Photo Facial is the Rolls Royce of laser treatments–why settle for anything less?!

IPL Laser? Not at OVME.

There are other laser treatments on the market such as the IPL. OVME doesn’t offer this service simply because our OVME Laser Resurfacing and OVME Photo Facial treatments are simply better. Think of it this way: the OVME Photo Facial (BBL) is the newest technology of light therapy procedures, comparable to the latest and greatest iPhone. In comparison, the IPL is like a flip phone.

02. Benefits of Laser Treatments

According to a study conducted by Patrick Bitter Jr., MD, FAAD, the OVME Photo Facial (BBL) is the first and only treatment capable of delaying the appearance of visible skin aging. The OVME Photo Facial helps reverse the aging process, which returns skin to its natural, youthful state. Regular treatments will delay the aging process.

Laser treatments can correct and reverse the appeareance of:

  • Natural aging
  • Freckles, age spots, sun damage, and discoloration
  • Small blood vessels and rosacea
  • Scarring
  • Loss of firmness
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Fine lines

03. Where to Start with Laser Treatments

If you’re sold on the benefits of laser treatments and ready to book, where do you start? Great question!

You can begin treatments as early as in your 20’s and it’s never too late to start!

The best way to get started on your laser treatment path is to consult with an expert provider. We offer a complimentary OVME Skin Analysis so that our medical aesthetic experts can review your skin concerns in person and discuss your goals for improvement. Our team then works with you to create a customized treatment plan that addresses all of your needs.

04. Am I the Best Candidate for Laser Treatments?

Laser treatments can be highly beneficial for almost anyone. If you struggle with discoloration, uneven texture and skin tone, scarring, and aging, you will love the effects of laser treatments.

You should not start laser treatments if you:

  • Have a medical condition that interferes with clotting or wound healing
  • Are currently experiencing inflammation or infection in the area
  • Are pregnant or nursing

05. Do Lasers Hurt?

Do lasers hurt? No. Are they unomfortable? Maybe. Many clients say that the OVME Photo Facial treatments feel like tiny rubber bands snapping on your skin, and treatments can be tailored to you comfort level. For OVME Laser Resurfacing procedures, we numb the face so you feel very little discomfort during the procedure, but clients describe the feeling as a warm sensation with occasional prickling. You should feel very little discomfort, but prescription medication is available to minimize discomfort if you are interested.

“I am absolutely in love with my new skin…The best part is that the treatment itself was painless. Post treatment there was a warmth in my skin.”

06. How to Prepare for Laser Treatments

Before you come in for your laser treatment:

  • Avoid heavy sun exposure and always use your daily SPF. Fresh sun damage (within the four weeks leading up to your procedure) may impact the results of the procedure and cause irritation and discomfort.
  • Avoid abrasive facial procedures (like peels, strong exfoliation, and microdermabrasion) within the four weeks leading up to your procedure. Too many intense procedures within a short period of time will cause irritation. We want to approach this gently!
  • Do not use any medications that cause photosensitivity or skin sensitivity in general for at least 72 hours before your procedure.
  • Drink plenty of water and come with a fresh, clean face.

07. What to Expect from your Laser Treatment

Timing:
OVME Photo Facial:
Your appointment will be about 45 minutes from start to finish. We spend the first 15 minutes thoroughly cleansing the skin and taking photos in the OVME Skin Analysis to track progress. The treatment itself takes only about 30 minutes to correct “all the things.”

OVME Laser Resurfacing:
Your appointment will likely last around two hours. Preparation (like numbing application and consulting with your provider) takes about 60 minutes, while the actual procedure can take up to 60 minutes.

Day Of:
OVME Photo Facial:
Most clients are surprised to see that their skin looks completely normal immediately after the treatment. Depending on your skin type, you may appear slightly flushed, experience mild warmth, or see light skin darkening (sun damage) that fades within two hours.

OVME Laser Resurfacing:
Upon completion of your treatment, you will feel a warm sensation in your skin–almost like a sunburn. This lasts on average up to four hours. Individual results may vary.

Day Two:
OVME Photo Facial:
If you are prone to swelling, you will likely experience mild puffiness under your eyes the next morning. (You may even like how it smoothed the area!) Some clients experience mild puffiness or rosiness that disappears as the day goes on.

OVME Laser Resurfacing:
One day after your laser treatment, expect to have some minor swelling, a pink or rosy hue to your skin, and a feeling of skin tightness. You can wear makeup to hide the discoloration, but you should refrain from any heavy applications.

Day Three – Seven:
OVME Photo Facial:
In a few days, your skin is looking smoother and brighter. The Photo Facial makes underlying dark spots or freckles slightly darker before they slough off naturally, so you may experience what we call ‘coffee grounds’ which disappear progressively in the first week after treatment.

OVME Laser Resurfacing:
A few days after your treatment, you will begin to experience a fine, sandpaper-like texture to your skin. You may notice something called MENDS (micro epidermal necrotic debris), which are microscopic wounds from the laser treatment that are a part of the healing process, and are often described as having a coffee grind appearance.

Day Seven & On:
OVME Photo Facial:
In one week, your skin will see visible improvement of browns and a reduction in reds (flushing and spider veins)–even after just one or two treatments. You can now assess your skin’s appearance and schedule a follow-up treatment to keep the results coming!

OVME Laser Resurfacing:
One week later, the sandpaper texture is gone and the natural skin healing process is more noticeable. Your skin is visibly improved and looks glowing and refreshed. And the effects don’t stop there; it’s just the beginning.

Months One – Three:
OVME Photo Facial:
Within 2-3 months, clients see the full effects of the Photo Facial. You will experience a noticeable difference in the reduction of fine lines, improved softness, noticeable clarity, skin smoothness, and more consistent skin color and tone.

OVME Laser Resurfacing:
One month after treatment, your body begins to increase production of hyaluronic acid, which plumps and hydrates the skin. This is when you notice your skin looking actively brighter. For the next 2 months you will notice an increase in collagen and a revitalized appearance to your skin.

6 Months – 1 Year:
OVME Photo Facial:
To achieve the best results for your skin goals, we recommend a series of 3-7 Photo Facials performed about every month. Once you’re happy with the state of your complexion, recommended maintenance is scheduling 3-4 Photo Facials per year.

OVME Laser Resurfacing:
At about the six-month mark, you will really notice the difference. This is when the compliments will come flooding in! Your skin has made its recovery and will continue to look fabulous. The collagen-generating effects continue for up to a year.

08. Recommended Aftercare

Today’s lasers have come a long way with less downtime and less discomfort than ever before. You can even wear makeup to hide any discoloration the very next day!

After laser treatment, it’s important to avoid the sun (always wear SPF!), heat (which includes saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, hot showers, etc.), retinols, abrasive cleansers, and waxing for at least a week.

Be very gentle with your skin and avoid scrubbing and exfoliating of any kind. Use gentle cleansers and moisturizers that don’t contain harsh chemicals, exfoliants, or retinols. Wear a hat and protective clothing if you must go into the sun, but always wear SPF no matter what.

09. Potential Side Effects from Laser Treatments

When you book a laser treatment at OVME, you’ll benefit from being treated by our medically-trained providers. However, everybody’s skin reacts differently. It’s common—and completely normal—to experience the following side effects after your treatment:

  • Minor swelling
  • Red skin that may be warm to the touch
  • Dry, flaky skin
  • Itchy skin
  • Discomfort or minor stinging and irritation
  • Pinpoint bleeding at the treatment area

While these side effects are to be expected post-treatment, if you experience any side effects related to infection, please seek guidance from our office. Symptoms of an infection include:

  • Fluid, pus-like drainage
  • Increased warmth at the treatment area
  • Fever
  • Extreme itching

10. Cost of Laser Treatments

Laser treatments vary in price depending on the type of laser treatment, where you’re located, and the area of the body you’re having treated. You can expect to pay anywhere from $500-$1,500 on average per treatment. You can see our full pricing menu comparison here.

You won’t have to worry about the price with our amazing membership deals! OVME members save on laser treatments, fillers, Botox, and so much more! The OVME Photo Facial starts at $400 for Elite Members and $500 for non-members. OVME Laser Resurfacing begins at $1,400 for Elite Members and $1,500 for non-members. 11. In-Studio vs. At-Home Lasers

In order to achieve meaningful results using proven and safe methods, laser treatments should be provided by medical experts who are trained in the particular operation.

One of the major benefits of receiving laser treatments in-studio is that the providers are expertly trained. They will take the time to provide custom recommendations including treatment frequency and intensity.

Our official recommendation? Come see an expert medical aesthetician so you don’t have to worry about unpredictable outcomes. Find an OVME Studio near you.

12. In Conclusion

Laser treatments are highly effective and treat almost all major skin concerns. With little to no downtime and very little pain, the effects of these non-surgical procedures are incredible for overcoming normal aging and skin imperfections!

We love laser treatments for their efficacy, longevity, minimal downtime and affordability.
