Chemical Peel FAQs

Questions about this treatment? Here’s what you should know before, during, and after your visit.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing cosmetic treatment in which a chemical solution is applied to the face, removing the top layer of skin and revealing a smoother, younger-looking complexion.

What does a chemical peel do?

Chemical peels remove the top layer of skin with a solution that contains different types of acids like trichloroacetic acid, glycolic acid, and carbolic acid. This causes the outer layer of skin to eventually flake off as you heal. This improves skin texture/tone and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Who can benefit from skin peels?

Almost everyone can experience the benefits of a chemical peel—it just depends on the type of peel that you get. For example:

  • Level 1: This is the least invasive type of peel and is suitable for most skin types. They have minimal downtime and are generally less painful than other types of peels.
  • Level 2: Slightly more intense, this mid-level peel goes a little bit deeper to treat discoloration, hyperpigmentation, and deeper wrinkles. It’s generally considered safe for most skin types, although redness can occur and last for 1-2 days after treatment.
  • Level 3: This is the most intense of the treatments as it penetrates several layers to target sun damage, scarring, and other more prominent skin issues. The results can be dramatic, but they can also be accompanied by a bleaching effect and should not be used on those with olive or dark complexions.

How long does a chemical peel take?

A chemical peel can take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes depending on the level of treatment selected.
